History and culture

Morro da Urca as Rio’s cultural stage

The history of the cable car and the events at the top The hill has been part of the city for more than a century.

O Morro da Urca is the first stop on the Sugar Loaf Bondinho Park trip, between Praia Vermelha station and the top of Sugarloaf Mountain.

In October 27, 1912, the first section of the cable car was opened, connecting Praia Vermelha to Morro da Urca. The project was designed by the engineer Brazilian Augusto Ferreira Ramos.

The following year, the second section was opened, between Morro da Urca and Sugarloaf Mountain, forming the connection that gave rise to one of Brazil's main postcards.

From the 1930s onwards, Morro da Urca began to consolidate as a cultural, tourist space and entertainment.

In 1980, the project Carioca Nights, directed by Nelson Motta, transformed Morro da Urca on one of the most important stages of Rio's music and nightlife.

Over the years, artists like Cazuza, Tim Maia, Rod Stewart and Bob Marley attended presentations in the spaces of Morro da Urca.

Currently, the place hosts shows, parties, festivals, business events, weddings, brand activations and sunset experiences.
