History of the Marina

Marina da Glória: meeting between city, park and sea

A nautical and cultural complex built in one of the most famous landscapes of Rio de Janeiro.

A Marina da Glória was opened in 1979, inside Flamengo Park, on the shores of Guanabara Bay. The area includes the landscaped complex of Aterro do Flamengo, recognized for its urban, architectural value and environmental.

The original project was developed by the architect Amaro Machado, with collaboration from the landscaper Roberto Burle Marx. The proposal sought to create a nautical structure that respected the scale, vegetation and lines of the park.

The project received approval from the Heritage Institute National Historical and Artistic in 1976. The central concern was preserve the visual relationship between the city, the park, the cove and Guanabara Bay.

From her early years, Marina began to serve as a support point for leisure navigation, sailing schools, competitions, tourist boats and activities linked to nautical culture.

With the growth of events held at the location, the Marina also became the stage for fairs, music festivals, exhibitions, parties, business meetings and large productions outdoor cultural activities.

In 2007, the space was connected to the Pan American Games sailing competitions from Rio de Janeiro. In 2011, he received the draw World Cup qualifying preliminary 2014 FIFA.

The Marina has undergone extensive revitalization before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. During the Games, it was the operational center of sailing competitions held in Guanabara Bay.

The renovation project sought to concentrate part of infrastructure in discrete areas and integrate the new buildings at the curves of the cove and the landscape of Flamengo Park.

Currently, the complex is managed by BR Marinas and appears on the channels officers as well as Axia Marina da Glória. In addition to the nautical operation, it continues to receive public and private events of different formats.
