Rival Theater (or Rival Refit Theater for sponsorship reasons) is a theatre in the center of Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1934.
It opened its doors on March 22, 1934, with the comedy Love, from Oduvaldo Viana, starring Dulcina de Moraes e Odilon de Azevedo. At the time, it attracted attention due to the size of its stage, divided into three parts, and the 24 fans installed to circulate fresh air, as the theater occupied an underground space. The decoration in blue, pink and silver was designed by the artist Monteiro Filho.
It initially belonged to Vivaldo Leite Barbosa, owner of the Rex building. After successive sales, it came into the hands of Americo Leal in 1970. A businessman of the revue theater, Américo made Rival a focus of resistance of this genre. Angela Leal, Américo's daughter, took over running the house in the 1990s, with the help of her daughter, also an actress Leandra Leal. From 2001, the house became sponsored by Petrobras, receiving the name Teatro Rival Petrobras. In 2019, the state-owned company broke its partnership with the theater due to a change in the company's sponsorship policy, which put the venue's operation at risk. Since January 2020, the theater has been sponsored by Refinaria Refit, changing its name to Teatro Rival Refit.
In 2005, Teatro Rival was the venue for Alegria da Zona Sul, a samba school that that year competed in Access Group A of the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. The title of the plot was “Teatro Rival, 70 years of cultural resistance” and the group came in 5th place in the final classification.
From 2001, the house started to be sponsored by Petrobras, receiving the name Teatro Rival Petrobras.[7] In 2019, the state breaks the partnership with the theater due to a change in the company's sponsorship policy, which put the operation of the venue at risk.[8]
From January of 2020 to April 2023,[9] the theater was sponsored by Refit Refinery, changing its nomenclature to Rival Refit Theater.[10][9][11]
In 2024, it will once again receive sponsorship from Petrobras through Culture Incentive Law, from Ministry of Culture.[1]
