What is Baile Charme?

Baile Charme was born within the black dance circuit from Rio de Janeiro. During the 1970s and 1980s, sound crews, DJs, suburban clubs and regulars built a scene linked to soul, North American funk, to disco music and, later, to R.

The creation of the name is attributed to DJ Corello. During a dance at Clube Mackenzie, in Méier, he announced the part slowest and most engaging part of the night, like the hour of “charm”. The expression came to identify songs, steps, dances and a particular way of occupying the dance floor.

In the early 1990s, the movement gained one of its main territories under the Negrão de Lima Viaduct. The occupation transformed a passage area into a space for dance, sociability, fashion, entrepreneurship and affirmation of suburban black culture.

In 2013, the Baile Charme do Viaduto de Madureira was recognized as a Cultural Asset of Intangible Nature of city of Rio de Janeiro.

The Madureira Viaduct is the most important address in the movement. The track occupies the space under Viaduto Negrão de Lima and brings together different generations of charmeiros, DJs residents, guests, dance groups and performances specials.

The traditional dance takes place on Saturdays, starting at 10pm. The program can continue into the early hours of the morning. Values and Entry conditions vary, and some editions offer free or reduced price for those who arrive early.

Rio Antigo Charm Ball

Free Lapa First Saturday

Rua do Resende turns into a track in the first Saturday of each month, along with the movement of the traditional Lavradio Fair.

The event takes place from 3pm to 11pm and attracts dancers experienced, curious, locals and tourists. For being carried out in the afternoon, it is one of the simplest options for those who want to discover the charm without crossing the dawn.

Entry is free. In case of heavy rain, closure or special event in the region, confirm the completion before leaving.

Free Madureira Park Daytime meeting

The Só Charme Team promotes meetings in Parque Madureira, normally in the late afternoon. The format is more open and informal than the big nighttime dance at the Viaduto.

It is a good option to observe the steps, practice in community environment and meet people who go to different ages.

Itinerant Black Music Band and DJs

Black Bom is not exclusively a Baile Charme, but it is one of Rio's main references for those looking for soul, R.

Created in the Pedra do Sal region, the project went through Mauá Square, Museum of Tomorrow, CCBB, MAM and major festivals, combining DJs with live performances.
