elementor-size-default\">The institution was founded in 1837 by a group of forty-three Portuguese immigrants, political refugees, to promote culture among the Portuguese community in the then capital of the Empire.<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46c2bf91 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"46c2bf91\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It was the first association of this community in the city.<\/p><p>The current headquarters building, designed by the Portuguese architect Rafael da Silva e Castro, was built between 1880 and 1887 in the Neo-Manueline style. This architectural style evokes the exuberant Gothic-Renaissance style in force at the time of the Portuguese Discoveries, known as\u00a0<i>Manueline<\/i>\u00a0in Portugal as it coincided with the reign of\u00a0D.\u00a0Manuel\u00a0(<abbr title=\"reign\">r.<\/abbr> 1495\u20131521).<\/p><p>The Emperor\u00a0<a title=\"Pedro II of Brazil\" href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pedro_II_do_Brasil\">D. Pedro II<\/a>\u00a0(1831\u20131889) laid the cornerstone of the building on June 10, 1880, and his daughter, the\u00a0Princess Isabel, together with her husband, the\u00a0Conde d\u2019Eu, inaugurated it on\u00a0September 10,\u00a01887.<\/p><div><div>\u00a0<\/div><\/div><p>The\u00a0fa\u00e7ade, inspired by the\u00a0Mosteiro dos Jer\u00f3nimos\u00a0in\u00a0Lisbon, was crafted by\u00a0Germano Jos\u00e9 Salle\u00a0in\u00a0lioz stone\u00a0in Lisbon and brought by ship to Rio. The four\u00a0statues\u00a0that adorn it depict, respectively,\u00a0Pedro \u00c1lvares Cabral,\u00a0Lu\u00eds de Cam\u00f5es,\u00a0Infante D. Henrique\u00a0and\u00a0Vasco da Gama. The medallions on the facade depict, respectively, the writers\u00a0Fern\u00e3o Lopes,\u00a0Gil Vicente,\u00a0Alexandre Herculano\u00a0and\u00a0Almeida Garrett<\/p><p>The interior also follows the neo-Manueline style in the shutters, wooden shelves for books and commemorative monuments. The ceiling of\u00a0<i>Reading Room<\/i>\u00a0It has a beautiful chandelier and an iron-structured skylight, the first example of this type of architecture in Brazil. The hall also has a beautiful monument made of silver, ivory and marble (the\u00a0<i>Altar of the Fatherland<\/i>), 1.7 meters high, which celebrates the age of discoveries, held at Casa Reis.<\/p><p>Open to the public since 1900, the Royal Cabinet library has the largest collection of Portuguese works outside of\u00a0Portugal. Among the approximately 350,000 volumes, national and foreign, there are rare works such as a copy of the edition \u201c<i>princeps<\/i>\u201d by\u00a0<i>The Lus\u00edadas<\/i>\u00a0of Cam\u00f5es (1572), the\u00a0<i>Orders of D. Manuel<\/i>\u00a0(1521), the\u00a0<i>Capitols of Cortes and Leys that on some of them they made<\/i>\u00a0(1539), the\u00a0<i>True information from the lands of Prester Joam, according to the testimony and writing of Father Francisco Alvarez<\/i>\u00a0(1540), a manuscript of the\u00a0comedy\u00a0\u201c<i>You, only you, pure love<\/i>\u201d by Machado de Assis, and many others. Every year, it receives around six thousand titles from Portugal. There is also an important collection of paintings by Jos\u00e9 Malhoa, Carlos Reis, Oswaldo Teixeira, Eduardo Malta and Henrique Medina. Every day, it receives, on average, one hundred and fifty visitors. Among its illustrious visitors from the past are the names of Machado de Assis, Olavo Bilac and Jo\u00e3o do Rio.<\/p><p>In July 2014, the library was listed in 4th position among the 20 most beautiful libraries in the world according to Time magazine (magazine).
