elementor-size-default\">A institui\u00e7\u00e3o foi fundada em 1837 por um grupo de quarenta e tr\u00eas imigrantes portugueses, refugiados pol\u00edticos, para promover a cultura entre a comunidade portuguesa na ent\u00e3o capital do Imp\u00e9rio.<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46c2bf91 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"46c2bf91\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Foi a primeira associa\u00e7\u00e3o desta comunidade na cidade.<\/p><p>O\u00a0edif\u00edcio\u00a0da atual sede, projetado pelo\u00a0arquiteto\u00a0portugu\u00eas\u00a0Rafael da Silva e Castro, foi erguido entre 1880 e 1887 em\u00a0estilo neomanuelino. Este estilo arquitet\u00f4nico evoca o exuberante estilo g\u00f3tico-renascentista vigente \u00e0 \u00e9poca dos\u00a0Descobrimentos portugueses, denominado como\u00a0<i>manuelino<\/i>\u00a0em Portugal por haver coincidido com o reinado de\u00a0D.\u00a0Manuel\u00a0(<abbr title=\"reinado\">r.<\/abbr> 1495\u20131521).<\/p><p>O Imperador\u00a0<a title=\"Pedro II do Brasil\" href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pedro_II_do_Brasil\">D. Pedro II<\/a>\u00a0(1831\u20131889) lan\u00e7ou a pedra fundamental do edif\u00edcio em 10 de junho de 1880, e sua filha, a\u00a0Princesa Isabel, junto com seu marido, o\u00a0Conde d&#8217;Eu, inauguraram-no em\u00a010 de setembro\u00a0de\u00a01887.<\/p><div><div>\u00a0<\/div><\/div><p>A\u00a0fachada, inspirada no\u00a0Mosteiro dos Jer\u00f3nimos\u00a0de\u00a0Lisboa, foi trabalhada por\u00a0Germano Jos\u00e9 Salle\u00a0em\u00a0pedra de lioz\u00a0em Lisboa e trazida de navio para o Rio. As quatro\u00a0est\u00e1tuas\u00a0que a adornam retratam, respectivamente,\u00a0Pedro \u00c1lvares Cabral,\u00a0Lu\u00eds de Cam\u00f5es,\u00a0Infante D. Henrique\u00a0e\u00a0Vasco da Gama. Os medalh\u00f5es da fachada retratam, respectivamente, os escritores\u00a0Fern\u00e3o Lopes,\u00a0Gil Vicente,\u00a0Alexandre Herculano\u00a0e\u00a0Almeida Garrett<\/p><p>O interior tamb\u00e9m segue o estilo neomanuelino nas portadas, estantes de madeira para os livros e monumentos comemorativos. O teto do\u00a0<i>Sal\u00e3o de Leitura<\/i>\u00a0tem um belo\u00a0candelabro\u00a0e uma\u00a0claraboia\u00a0em estrutura de\u00a0ferro, o primeiro exemplar desse tipo de arquitetura no Brasil. O sal\u00e3o possui tamb\u00e9m um bel\u00edssimo monumento de\u00a0prata,\u00a0marfim\u00a0e\u00a0m\u00e1rmore\u00a0(o\u00a0<i>Altar da P\u00e1tria<\/i>), de 1,7 metros de altura, que celebra a \u00e9poca dos descobrimentos, realizado na Casa Reis &amp; Filhos no\u00a0Porto\u00a0pelo\u00a0ourives Ant\u00f3nio Maria Ribeiro, e adquirido em 1923 pelo Real Gabinete.<\/p><p>Aberta ao p\u00fablico desde 1900, a biblioteca do Real Gabinete possui a maior cole\u00e7\u00e3o de obras portuguesas fora de\u00a0Portugal. Entre os cerca de 350\u00a0000 volumes, nacionais e estrangeiros, encontram-se obras raras como um exemplar da edi\u00e7\u00e3o &#8220;<i>princeps<\/i>&#8221; de\u00a0<i>Os Lus\u00edadas<\/i>\u00a0de Cam\u00f5es (1572), as\u00a0<i>Ordena\u00e7\u00f5es de D. Manuel<\/i>\u00a0(1521), os\u00a0<i>Capitolos de Cortes e Leys que sobre alguns delles fizeram<\/i>\u00a0(1539), a\u00a0<i>Verdadeira informa\u00e7am das terras do Preste Joam, segundo vio e escreveo ho padre Francisco Alvarez<\/i>\u00a0(1540), um manuscrito da\u00a0com\u00e9dia\u00a0&#8220;<i>Tu, s\u00f3 tu, puro amor<\/i>&#8221; de Machado de Assis, e muitas outras. Anualmente, recebe cerca de seis mil t\u00edtulos de Portugal. H\u00e1 tamb\u00e9m uma importante cole\u00e7\u00e3o de pinturas de Jos\u00e9 Malhoa, Carlos Reis, Oswaldo Teixeira, Eduardo Malta e Henrique Medina. Diariamente, recebe, em m\u00e9dia, cento e cinquenta visitantes. Entre os seus visitantes ilustres, do passado, encontram-se os nomes de Machado de Assis, Olavo Bilac e Jo\u00e3o do Rio.<\/p><p>Em julho de 2014 a biblioteca foi listada em 4.\u00aa posi\u00e7\u00e3o dentre as 20 mais lindas bibliotecas do mundo segundo a revista\u00a0Time (revista).
